Boston College hires BPD chief who led department accused of turning student info over to ICE

Boston College hires BPD chief who led department accused of turning student info over to ICE

Weeks after a scandal broke because a Boston Public Schools (BPS) resource officer’s report was used in a deportation hearing for a BPS student who was then deported. The Boston Police Department (BPD) is accused of having passed the resource officer’s report on to ICE through the BPD run fusion center. In the wake of this scandal both the superintendent of BPS and now the Boston Police commissioner William Evans have stepped down.  Neither cite the scandal as the reason for their departure from their positions, and Evans already has a new job leading the Boston College police department.

I reached out to Boston College and asked them to comment on the hiring. Specifically I asked them:

  • Does BC have a policy that would stop Evans from continuing to share student info with ICE?

  • When hiring Evans did BC consider the message it is sending to any foreign students who might consider attending the college?

  • Why did BC choose to hire a man whose previous department is involved in a scandal about handing student information to ICE?

They haven’t had time to respond yet, if they respond I will publish an update to this news notes.
